This gorgeous couple, Astrid and Tom, decided on an intimate wedding at a New Zealand Nature Reserve called Nga Manu, just north of Wellington. See how their stunning day evolved below.

The Proposal...

Thomas and Astrid had been dating for 13 years before they got engaged.  Although they’d been together for so long, Thomas knew that Astrid wanted a proper proposal. New Years Eve 2012 came and went without event, so Astrid put it out of her mind completely when Thomas insisted they needed to go camping one weekend in February. Astrid didn't suspect a thing until, on the way to their moonlit walk on the beach (at Paekakariki), they had to stop by the car to pick up some supplies (a bottle of champagne, glasses and some stuff in a bag...). Once Thomas found a good spot on the beach he asked Astrid to watch the ocean while he struggled with something behind her. When she was allowed to turn around - Thomas had lit candles on bamboo sticks to form a heart and he sang her their special song accompanied by his ukulele playing! Of course Astrid said yes when he got down on one knee. A super sweet proposal!124578910111316181921222325262728293031323537384042445253555659656870758183848990919495101103105106107108109112115116119121122124126127128134135136

The dress...

Finding the dress was so much easier than Astrid expected. She made an appointment with Astra Bridal and asked her mum to come along too. Astrid’s mum was so emotional that she started crying even before she could get the first dress half on... While Astrid tried on a few more dresses to figure out what style she suited, her mum was busy hunting through the sale rack (her favourite hobby) and she picked out Astrid’s dress. Astrid had shown her pictures of what she wanted and her mum had found the dress! Astrid decided to buy it right there but she did agonise for a few weeks after about whether she’d cheated herself out of the fun of trying hundreds of dresses on. In the end she was super happy with how the dress looked and we have to agree!

The wedding day...
The laid back New Zealand celebration had many meaningful details weaved throughout the day: deep purples colour schemes, a nature theme with Astrid having using ferns and flax for decoration, handmade bouquets and button holes out of flax. The groom designed an amazing wedding emblem inspired by all the adventures they’d had together over their 15 year love story, live music was played by some talented friend,  a laid back barbecue reception formed the evening and a delicious cake was made by her bridesmaid. There were so many gorgeous and special moments which made their day  truly unique and special.

The photos...
Astrid and Tom really enjoyed having Michelle and James from Patina Photography as their wedding photographers. The couple chose them by searching through lots of online portfolios of local photographers and really loved Patina Photography's style. They felt Michelle and James were both lovely to work with, putting the couple at ease with their friendly nature and making a big effort to chat to their family members. Astrid and Tom felt at the end of the day it felt like they had been guests at their wedding rather than just their photographers. The resulting photos are fantastic and they completely love the end result.
